Customer Reviews for Kodak Easyshare Z1275 Digital Camera (12MP, 5x Optical zoom)
Camera is cheap? Why? This camera is ace! posted on 2007-12-27
At 12MP, 5x Optical zoom (then more digital zoom (about 5x)), then the 720P HD video recording (with sound), you can't go wrong with this camera. I didn't buy this here because I got this for Christmas, but I asked for this camera.

All the details it gives you, it sounds too good to be true at £141 (price was correct when I wrote this) but all the details are right!

Quality of pictures are good. Even when moving the camera fast, the pictures come out clear (I wouldn't say crystal clear). But with every single camera, keep still for best results (it has that picture stablilsation thingamajig but like said, keep the camera still if can)!

You can change the resolution lower if you wished (down to 9MP, etc) to save space (same with videos) but I keep mine high.

The 720P HD video recording is amazing. Really good quality. I'm just sad that it comes out in Quicktime format so won't work on Windows Media Player or my PS3 (reason why I gave this 4stars and not 5) but luckily, I have a converter on my laptop so it can go onto my PS3.

So, if you're looking for a really good camera, this is the one. Get it whilst the price is low!

Room for improvement posted on 2007-09-06
This is my fifth digital camera and having played with the Z1275 for a week I can summarise my impressions;
Battery life is the first concern, even by purchasing 2400mAH rechargeables I was unable to keep the camera operational for more than 30 minute video or the takng of more than 50 pictures so I would suggest always carry spares.
The 12 Megapixel CCD has good low light preview capabilities but the storage compression is so high at over 6:1 that the resulting definition is less than perfect and does not lend itself to further editing, this may be excelent for up to A4 but cropping and poster prints are probably out of reach.
The cameras automatic scene detection mode produces consistently good results although as the mode is only calculated just prior to taking a picture there can be a noticable delay after pushing the button(0.3 sec) and the autofocus feature does not always work if there is not a face to track or reference, this feature is always active and can become a problem if taking landscape pictures.
Digital image stabalisation (DSI) has been knocked within some formal reviews but I guess this must be because the reviewers were testing it at 12 MP as it only comes into play when capturing at below 10MP. Above this resolution the CCD has little scope to allow for shake so the results are terrible (at 12MP). DIS is also always active when in video mode so panning quickly results in both jitter and continuous adjustment of the autofocus, this settles quickly when panning stops.
You can also use zoom when in video mode but again the autofocus takes half a second to catch up, but once in focus the results are relatively good when compared with VHS or DV tape.
Operationally the camera has many features that once understood make the camera very versitile, so it is a good all rounder but for me it's strength lies in the 720p video unless a future firmware update can improve the compressed pictures by allowing a compression choice and more control of the autofocus limitations.
As a footnote the video uses H.264 so this avoids the high JPEG compression and has the added bonus of allowing single frame capture suitable for A6 prints.
